Initiated by A GROUP OF INDEPENDENT TRANSPORT EXPERTS, the concept picks up on the findings of the 2015 City of Geelong’s Integrated Comprehensive Transport Plan.
The Plan identifies the need for an ‘efficient, connected and robust transport network’ to fuel regional growth and address local congestion issues.
In broad terms, the solution would see inner Geelong – along with Grovedale, Belmont and the urban growth areas of Mt Duneed/Armstrong Creek – connected to Torquay via a convenient, safe, high-capacity public transport service.
This service could be either bus rapid transit, light rail transit or trackless tram. These three options have a common advantage – each can effectively share the existing road corridor, and much of its infrastructure.
This means more people can move more efficiently, freeing up existing road space.
And that’s a ‘win-win’ for private motorists and public transport users alike.
